Kohli's first-ever ODI century was achieved in his 14th game, a stunning century while chasing Sri Lanka, one year and three months after he made his India debut. It was a difficult target. A brilliant 118 from Upul Tharanga and a half-century from Kumar Sangakkara had driven Sri Lanka to 315 at the Eden Gardens. India's response had them in a precarious position after losing Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar with just 23 runs scored. But then Gautam Gambhir and former Delhi teammate Kohli struck together a 224-run partnership. After hitting 11 fours and a six, Kohli eventually left the game for 107, but Gambhir's perfect 150 helped India win.
