Kohli's century against Bangladesh set the stage for his subsequent five hundreds over the next 11 months in 2023. The first of those matches was against Sri Lanka, a team that Kohli has always enjoyed batting against. Rohit and Shubman Gill, India's top order, had a field day as they both scored fast-bowling fifties. However, Kohli, who was dropped twice, on 52 and 81, did not give up until nearly the very end, allowing Sri Lanka to record a massive total of 274. While it wasn't quite the Kohli of old (he didn't seem to be able to take off in the last overs as he did earlier), it was still enough to give India 70 runs in the final nine overs. With 306 riders on skipper Dasun Shanaka's 108, Sri Lanka mounted a valiant counterattack, but the gap was too great to overcome.
